About Us
The Hardy Plant Society Middlesex Group is one
of many groups that are affiliated with the main organisation
called The Hardy Plant Society (see links
page for main Hardy Plant Society web site).
The Hardy Plant Society Middlesex Group, based
in Eastcote in the old county of Middlesex, engenders the same
ethos as the main organisation. From its earliest days, the Hardy
Plant Society has always been a very different society and the
range of activities offered locally and nationally gives members
plenty of opportunity to meet other keen gardeners, sharing ideas
and information in a convivial atmosphere. The activities and
work of the Society inform and encourage the novice gardener,
stimulate and enlighten the more knowledgeable, and entertain
and enthuse all gardeners bonded by a love for, and an interest
in, hardy perennial plants.
Membership: Membership is open to anyone who
has an interest in hardy perennial plants. The membership fee
is paid annually and consists of two separate amounts. The local
Middlesex Group fee is £5 (single) £8 (couple) and
the main national Hardy Plant Society fee is £13 (single)
£15 (couple at same address ) giving a total of £18
(single) or £23 (couple) current of September 2004.
Note: if you are already a fully paid-up member of the national
Hardy Plant Society, you only have to pay the local Middlesex
Group fee to join our group.
A downloadable Membership Application form is available at the
bottom of this page.
Visitors: The Middlesex Group welcomes visitors,
for which we make a charge at the door of £2 per visitor,
per meeting.
What is a hardy perennial plant? A hardy plant
is one that will survive overwintering naturally in an outdoor
environment, even if the top growth is cut back by frost. A plant's
hardiness varies according to local climatic conditions. The term
perennial generally refers to a plant that enjoys a natural lifespan
of several growing seasons. Some hardy perennial plants can thrive
and live through a seasonal cycle over very many years or decades,
others may only live, or be at their best from a gardener's point
of view, for a limited number of years.
