Britain's internationally renowned and respected gardening charity, and a leading authority on many matters relating to horticulture.

Botanical Society of The British Isles
The Botanical Society of the British Isles is for everyone who is interested in the flora of Britain and Ireland. The society traces its origins back to 1836, when it was founded as the Botanical Society of London. From its earliest days it has welcomed both professional and amateur members, and it remains the biggest and most active organisation devoted to the study of botany in the British Isles.

The Wild Flower Society
The Wild Flower Society is the only national society created specifically for amateur botanists and wild flower lovers in the UK.


BOTANICAL GARDENS AND CENTRES

The Royal Botanic Gardens Kew
The world's most famous botanical gardens, which has recently been awarded World Heritage status. As well as being a beautiful garden situated inside London, it is a leading international botanical science research centre. Kew at Wakehurst Place, Sussex is home to the Millennium Seed Bank, which is a global conservation programme conceived, developed and managed by the Seed Conservation Department at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.

Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh
The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh was founded in the 17th century as a ‘Physic Garden’, growing medicinal plants. This first Garden was in St Anne’s Yard, part of the Holyrood Palace grounds, and occupied an area the size of a tennis court. It now extends to four sites – Edinburgh, Benmore (near Dunoon in Argyll), Logan (near Stranraer in Galloway), and Dawyck (near Peebles in the Borders), and is the second richest collection of plant species in the world.

The National Botanic Garden of Wales
As well as being a spectacular attraction, the Garden of Wales is an internationally renowned centre for botanical science. The Garden is dedicated to conservation, sustainability and environmental education.

The UK National Arboreta
The National Arboreta were formed in 2001 with the joining of the Forestry Commission’s two premier tree collections – Bedgebury Pinetum in Kent and Westonbirt Arboretum in Gloucestershire. Together they contain approximately 4000 different taxa and as such form one of the most comprehensive tree collections in the world.

Cambridge University Botanical Gardens
Cambridge University Botanical Gardens. A 40 acre oasis of beautifully landscaped gardens and glasshouses situated in the heart of the city.

Chelsea Physic Garden
Situated in the heart of London's Chelsea district, this 'Secret Garden' is a centre of education, beauty and relaxation. Founded in 1673 by the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries it continues it's research into the properties, origins and conservation of over 5000 species.


GARDENS WITH SPECIAL INTEREST

Sir Harold Hillier Gardens
Sir Harold Hillier Gardens (formerly known as the Hillier Arboretum) hold the greatest collection of hardy trees and shrubs in the world. Started by the late Sir Harold Hillier in 1953 and given in trust to Hampshire County Council in 1977, the Gardens now extend to 180 acres. Within this unique collection of more than 42,000 plants (12,500 different types), visitors will find much of interest throughout the year.

Myddelton House Gardens - Lee Valley Park
Myddelton House was home to E. A. Bowles (1865 – 1954) who devoted much of his life to the creation of the Garden. As an enthusiastic collector and accomplished plantsman Bowles discovered and selected many plants, in particular unusual varieties, many of which can still be seen in the Garden today. The Gardens are also home to the National Collection of award-winning Bearded Iris (provisional).

West Dean College and Gardens
A place of tranquility and beauty in the rolling South Downs all year round, West Dean features a restored walled kitchen garden with some of the finest Victorian glasshouses in the country. A circular walk through a 49-acre arboretum offers breathtaking views of the estate and its fine flint house and parkland setting. Rustic summerhouses, a 300ft Edwardian pergola, ornamental borders and a pond contrast with over 200 varieties of carefully trained fruit trees, rows of vegetables and exotic produce behind glass.

The National Gardens Scheme
The National Gardens Scheme has been opening fine gardens in England and Wales to the public to raise money for charity for over 75 years.

ENVIRONMENT

Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty
An Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) is exactly what it says it is: a precious landscape whose distinctive character and natural beauty are so outstanding that it is in the nation's interest to safeguard them.

Biodiversity in Urban Gardens Sheffield (BUGS)
The BUGS project was a three year investigation, looking at the significance of urban gardens as habitats for 'natural' biodiversity, and the efficacy of some simple 'creative conservation' measures in enhancing that biodiversity.

Butterfly Conservation
Dedicated to saving wild butterflies, moths and their habitats throughout UK.

CITES
CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) is an international agreement between Governments. Its aim is to ensure that international trade in specimens of wild animals and plants does not threaten their survival.

English Nature
English Government agency that champions the conservation of wildlife and geology.

Fauna & Flora International
Founded in 1903, FFI is the world’s longest established international conservation body. It is one of the few organizations whose remit is to protect the entire spectrum of endangered plant and animal species on the planet. We provide support to conservation initiatives throughout the world, in the form of partnerships, technical assistance, direct funding and consultancy.

Flora Locale
Promotes best practice in the sourcing and use of native plants.

National Council for the Conservation of Plants and Gardens
The NCCPG seeks to conserve, document, promote and make available Britain & Ireland's rich biodiversity of garden plants for the benefit of everyone through horticulture, education and science.

People and Plants International
PPI started in January 2004, with the help of the Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF), and builds on the work of the 12-year People and Plants Initiative, a partnership between WWF, UNESCO, and the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. This successful partnership provides a foundation for PPI's new projects.

Plantlife
Plantlife International is a charity dedicated exclusively to conserving all forms of plant life in the UK, Europe and across the world, in their natural habitats.

Plants for a Future
Plants for a Future is a resource centre for rare and unusual plants, particularly those which have edible, medicinal or other uses.
